A diffuser is the easiest way to start with essential oils. No mixing bowls, no measuring spoons: just water, a few drops and a switch. Here's everything you need to get it right the first time.
Step 1: Pick the right spot
Set your diffuser on a flat, stable surface at least a couple of feet off the floor, away from electronics, wood finishes that water could mark, and anywhere a child or pet could knock it over. A side table or shelf in the middle of the room spreads the scent better than a corner.
Step 2: Add water
Most ultrasonic diffusers use plain room-temperature tap water. Fill to the max line, never above it. Check your diffuser's manual; some models recommend filtered water to reduce mineral buildup.
Step 3: Add your oils
Start small. A common starting point is 3 to 6 drops for a standard-size diffuser, then adjust next time based on your room and your nose. More drops doesn't mean better; a soft scent is more pleasant over a long evening than a strong one.
Want a blend instead of a single oil? Use our 3-2-1 method: 3 drops of a bright top note, 2 drops of a middle note and 1 drop of a deep base note.
Step 4: Choose your run time
Many people diffuse in sessions of 30 to 60 minutes rather than all day. If your diffuser has an intermittent or timer setting, it's a great way to keep the scent present without overwhelming the room. Keep the room ventilated.
Step 5: Clean it weekly
Oils leave a light residue over time. Once a week, unplug the diffuser, empty it, wipe the reservoir with a soft cloth and follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. A clean diffuser smells truer and lasts longer.

No electric diffuser? No problem
A terra cotta hanging diffuser needs no water or power: add a few drops and the clay releases the scent slowly. Prefer to wear your scent? An aroma bracelet holds a drop or two on porous lava stone.
A quick safety note
Never apply undiluted essential oils to skin; dilute in a carrier oil and patch test first. Keep oils and diffusers away from children and pets, and some oils, like wintergreen, need extra care around them. If you're pregnant, nursing or under medical care, ask a healthcare professional before use. Stop diffusing if anyone in the room feels irritated.
